The BNSF railway sponsored a trainride for employees, family and friends this week. They will be here in Alliance for three days. We rode the mid-day train Sunday. It was fun...our grandson, Brooklyn, age 6, and our nephew, Michael were completely in awe.
As a child, I did take train rides. We rode to Grand Island, Nebraska to visit my grandparents, then they or some other relatives would drive to Grand Island to get us. To get on the train, we drove from Guernsey, Wyoming, usually, to the depot here in Alliance to board. The depot was a wonderful, undescribable building, and had these really great gum machines....not gumballs, but that gum in the square pieces. I still think those were really great. Unfortunately, several years ago, that wonderful depot was torn down, and a part of history gone forever. And, at least in our area of the United States, riding the trains is not something most of us will experience again, if ever.
Our train ride on Sunday was only a couple hours or so, but very much enjoyed. I hope that it will be a forever memory for Michael and Brooklyn.
